Foliage:
The plant exhibits striking foliage, with leaves reaching lengths of up to 1 meter. The petioles range from 14 to 40 cm long, supporting a rachis that bears 12 to 25 pairs of leaflets. Notably, the petioles are adorned with small prickles, adding a unique texture. The leaflets themselves are thin and wide, featuring minute teeth along the upper two-thirds, contributing to a delicate yet robust appearance.
Stems:
This species possesses subterranean, subglobose stems that can grow up to 10 cm in diameter, allowing it to anchor firmly in the soil and access nutrients.
Plant Morphology:
Morphologically, it bears similarities to Z. fischeri, yet it distinguishes itself with longer and more numerous leaves, each featuring more than 12 pairs of leaflets. The leaflets of Z. vazquezii are characterized by their ovate to obpyriform shape, tapering to acuminate tips. In contrast, Z. fischeri displays lanceolate leaflets with acute apices. Additionally, while Z. vazquezii often has small prickles on its petioles, Z. fischeri typically has smooth petioles, making it easier to differentiate between the two species.
