King Coconut (Cocos nucifera var. aurantiaca) is a distinctive variety of coconut native to Sri Lanka, where it is locally known as Thæmbili (Sinhala: තැඹිලි). This variety is also found in other regions of South Asia, including India and Indonesia. King coconuts are recognized for their slightly lower sugar content compared to other coconut varieties. Within the King coconut family, the most common sub-variety is the red dwarf (or kaha thæmbili), often referred to as gon thæmbili, while another variety, Ran Thæmbili, is known for its smaller, compact clusters of around forty nuts.

The King coconut tree is notably shorter than other coconut trees and can often be found growing wild across various regions of Sri Lanka. Its water, the liquid endosperm found in young King coconuts, is a highly nutritious drink, rich in natural sugars, potassium, vitamins (particularly B and C), and amino acids. Due to its health benefits, King coconut water has long been used in Ayurvedic medicine, where it is often combined with Aralu powder (Myrobalans) for added therapeutic effects.

In recent years, Sri Lanka has expanded its market presence by exporting packaged King coconut water under various brands, showcasing its healthful and refreshing qualities to the global market.

Sri Lanka is home to a variety of cultivated coconut types, many of which are studied and developed by the National Coconut Research Institute. This institution conducts ongoing research, including missions to explore the genetic diversity of coconuts in Sri Lanka's Southern Province, to enhance the cultivation and utilization of these valuable crops.
